Summary:Current safety-critical development standards, such as DO-178B, have an impressive track record in guiding the production of reliable software. Unfortunately, the certification activities involved are costly because of their labour-intensiveness and high levels of know-how. Additionally, current practices make it difficult to evolve and enhance certified projects. The Open-DO initiative tries to increase the agility and the level of automation in the production and certification of safety-critical software, focusing on more continuous and incremental certification approaches. The emphasis on open-source tools and materials will make tools and components for high-integrity development widely available, disseminating safety-critical development methodologies. (5 pages)
