Summary:The aim of this paper is to provide a short informal review of mathematical methods developed over the last few years in the area of radio channel assignment. It is directed at the general radio community, who may not have been previously aware of such work. The ideas described in the paper are the subject of ongoing research programmes in several university departments in the United Kingdom, with the active support of the Radiocommunications Agency.
