Summary:This chapter highlights the particular qualities and limitations of content analysis and discourse analysis, especially when applied to image-based data-sets. For content analysis, this chapter focuses on the importance to establish and distinguish the right type of variables, while simultaneously showing, through practical examples, the challenges in doing so successfully. For discourse analysis, it discusses the importance of recognising structures and patterns both in text and images, as well as the social circumstances of the production, distribution and reception of such artefacts. In the practical context of social media, this chapter finally addresses the particular difficulty of the "context collapse" that occurs online; multiple audiences congregate in virtual places, and social media users and researchers alike are left to imagine the contexts of production, distribution and reception.
