Summary: | Opera has been one of the most traceable and continuous symbols of the French state. Louis XIV, Napoleon, Louis XVIII, Napoleon III, Thiers, Charles de Gaulle and François Mitterrand are all linked by their absolute commitment to the maintenance of an opera at the centre of their orbits of power. Louis XIV's opera was found within Versailles and its gardens. Napoleon Bonaparte's was in his capital. Louis XVIII's was an extension of the palace. Charles X sanctified his at the cathedral of Rheims. Napoleon III and Thiers sited theirs within the commercial heart of the city. And finally François Mitterrand took the symbolic step of placing the opera at La Bastille, in the very heart of the square which symbolises revolutionary Paris. |
