Summary:In this paper, an image plane analysis is developed to measure the dynamic motion variables of a vehicle based on the road scene viewed from a camera inside the vehicle. Some motion variables such as centerline gradient angle, lateral deviation of the vehicle are measured. Vanishing point analysis is introduced to measure these motion variables. Vanishing points are established by the pixel table which transforms the feature length in an image plane into the real road plane. A calculation algorithm for an " in-vehicle image processing system" is proposed to measure the real-time motion variables based on continuous image signal captured by a camera. In this experimental work, the road scenes viewed are used to test in an off-line manner. The values of centerline gradient angle, lateral deviation in an image plane are acquired by inverse perspective transform are also analyzed.
