Summary: | Data compression techniques for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are discussed. The images are taken from the coronal section of the brain. Each image requires a large amount of storage and collectively a patient's record may require many images to be stored. Alternative methods to compress the data are discussed and these are applied to MRI images. The two methods discussed are the run-length and pyramid coding schemes. Results for both schemes are given. The mask images are seen to respond well to compression using run-length coding, and pyramid encoding is not as effective in binary images. The pyramid coding scheme has the advantage of making it possible to work on gray-level images and to reconstruct them from the encoded format.< > |
