Summary:This paper deals with the use of Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) sheets in a segmented Induction Motor (IM). An experimental process is performed to evaluate the impact of the cutting effect on iron losses. Samples are cut along the Rolling or Transverse Directions (RD and TD) with different widths and are characterised to evaluate power loss variations after cutting. Then, results are used to quantify the iron losses in three segmented IM of 355 mm frame size with different polarities. Two easy magnetization axis orientations relatively to the IM structure are investigated. The impacts of this design criterion on iron losses are estimated through Finite Element (FE) simulations and results are compared with conventional solutions.
