Summary: | (The cast was made up of neighborhood children and Clemens family members-including Twain himself.) In college, she starred in student productions, just as Nina later did. [...]Nina was surrounded by performers in her day-to-day life-and not just musical performers. Starting in 1926, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra performed Bach's masterpiece St. Matthew's Passion, a complicated oratorio involving two orchestras and two choruses. In New York, Clara studied under Freida Ashworth of the Metropolitan Opera.22 She made her official stage debut in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1906, the same year her future husband Ossip conducted an orchestra for the first time.23 One of Claras most famous performances was at a 1909 benefit concert for the new Mark Twain Library in Redding, Connecticut (which still stands to this day). |
