Summary: | At the Justa poetica of Toledo in 1605 Lope de Vega as master of ceremonies delivered an introductory panegyric Al nacimiento del Principe, which exemplifed the very nature of poetry as praise and performance drawing upon the traditional ends of epideitic rhetoric (laudare vel vituperare) and the strategies of invention through the places of argumentation (sedes argumentorum). On a broader conceptual level, however, Lope's panegyric substantiates the role of poetry and letters in the appropriation of a public aesthetic ideology that aspires to sharing power with statist politics for control and dominance of social, religious and cultural perceptions. |
