Summary:Families play an important role in supporting young people with mental illness. With changes to clinical services in recent decades including an increased emphasis on outpatient rather than inpatient treatment, families are often expected to monitor a young person's mental state for warning signs of relapse and are key bearers of responsibility in accessing services at these times. It is not surprising that families often experience stress when a young person becomes ill, and there are often complex relationships between parental behaviour and an adolescent's mental health. This chapter reviews relationships between family experiences and patient outcomes, the experiences of families of young people with early-onset mental illness, the evidence base for family interventions targeted at these families, and implications for what interventions should include.
