Summary: | Nickel-200 specimens were tested for chemical, electrochemical, and stress corrosion in chloroaluminate melt at 300 deg C. These samples were analyzed using metallographic and analytical techniques. There was negligible corrosion of Ni-200 in the chloroaluminate melt even after several months of testing. The corrosion inhibition was associated with the formation of a low-conducting nickel chloride barrier layer on the surface of the Ni electrode. The increasingly higher resistance of this layer prevents the further thickening of the layer and thereby limiting the charge uptake and consequently further corrosion. Materials also include 304 austenitic stainless steel. |
