Summary:The first overview report of the ESPON 2013 European research program makes the case for place-based policy-making and effective spatial planning. it stresses the importance of a territorial dimension for implementing the EU's strategy for economic recovery, Europe 2020. The report shows ways in which EU policies can have unintended effects on local assets, including landscapes, biodiversity and identity. The importance of local and regional analytical and planning capability is a recurring theme. Projects started in 2010 show a strong UK presence in the developing European research agenda.
