Summary: | Three budget-priced inkjet printers are reviewed. Units capable of black and three-color printing can now be bought for as little as $80, although some are based on outdated technology. The $79 Apollo P-1200 has an HP print engine dating from 1991 and is familiar in many ways, although the case design and software driver are updated. Print quality is poor; composite blacks look blue and photos print with gritty edges and washed-out colors. The $79 Canon BCJ-1000 employs technology introduced in 1992 and offers middling output quality for a very low price. The Lexmark Z11 is the best of the the three printers but is slightly more expensive at $119 on the street. It uses 1997 technology and generates far superior composite blacks as well as better text output than its rivals. |
