Summary:The paper introduces and discusses the concept of local governance for socioenvironmental management in traditionally occupied lands and agrarian reform settlements in the Amazon. Taking as empirical object emerging foci of local governance, there were attempts to base on concrete actions, carried out in certain contexts by actors engaged in the construction of new institutions. The text analyzes seven local socioecological systems, covered by the project "People Management: local proposals for environmental management", conducted by the Federal University of Para. It was observed that the technical, economic and commercial aspects, the issues of conflicts with external or internal to the communities actors, relations with public agencies require articulated action at two levels, local and regional / state. The empowerment process of local actors demands multifaceted and interinstitutional actions at these two levels, operated by formal and informal networks and supported by national and international cooperation. The text emphasizes the importance of new forms of politicization of community forest management and socio-environmental management initiatives that are gradually emerging in traditional territories and land reform settlements.
