Summary:This study examines airline managers’ acquisition of their corporate customers’ regulatory filings and the association of that acquisition with airlines’ operational decisions. Consistent with airline managers acquiring customers’ regulatory filings to help forecast demand, I find that airlines’ Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system (EDGAR) searches are positively associated with their yields (i.e., the product of average airfare and passenger load factors). This association strengthens when business travel demand is more volatile and when the market is more competitive, and is driven primarily by the acquisition of periodic accounting reports and proxy statements. My findings are robust to several attempts to address correlated omitted variables and endogeneity. Overall, the evidence enhances our understanding of the role of information acquisition in facilitating operational decisions.
