Summary: | Simple, systematic ways to think and communicate strategically when trying to resolve conflicts are discussed. Suggestions for strategic communication techniques are given in the book When Talking Makes Thing Worse!: Resolving Problems when Communication Fails, by David Stiebel. Strategic communication can be used by a chief executive officer to resolve a corporate takeover battle, by a mediator to avert a strike, by a police officer to defuse a confrontation, and by a couple to settle an argument about where to go for dinner. Guidelines for developing strategic communication include: 1. Decide whether you have a misunderstanding or a true disagreement. 2. Create the other person's next move. 3. Use the other person's own perceptions to convince them. 4. Predict the other person's response. |
