Summary:The incidence of poverty in Spain has risen significantly along the last years of the current economic crisis. However, this behaviour has not been completely uniform across space: in some regions poverty rates have grown very strongly while in others poverty has been kept stable or has even declined. Spatial differences in costs of living across space are not usually taken into account when calculating these rates of poverty. This work is focused on this issue: variations in the cost of living among regions and along the period 2006-2011 are measured by an almost ideal demand system, finding that there are significant changes both over time and space. This procedure allows for reviewing the poverty lines and its incidence in our country. We find that the variations on poverty in Spain are higher when regional differences in cost of living are taken into account. Moreover, the poverty map changes significantly: regions with higher income, specialized in tourism and with a higher degree of urbanization, seem to have higher costs of living which lead to higher incidences of poverty than those estimated without considering these cost of living differentials.
