Summary: | In an interview, Tommy G. Thompson, chairman of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, talked about price transparency. Basically, price transparency gives consumers, payers, and providers the opportunity to see what a particular healthcare service costs, what the quality is, and what the capabilities are. It gives consumers the opportunity to get the information necessary to make the right decision. One of the neatest and most innovative ways is through the consumer Web page. He predicts that overwhelmingly other hospitals are going to follow Alegent Health's lead and put their price and quality information on their Web sites, and then consumers are going to be able to start making comparisons. The pressure is building, and the ultimate conclusion is that people are going to have this comparison, and this is going to have a tremendous impact on price stabilization or even price reduction in health care. |
