Summary: | A strange mass of tissue was discovered in St. Louis County, Missouri—and for some time it defied identification by numerous authorities. Finally, it was identified as a massive "pellicle," composed of a colony of Acetobacter xylinum bacteria and its fibrils of extracellular cellulose. The investigation is recounted, retrospectively analyzed, and recommendations are offered to others who may find aberrant objects. These recommendations focus on the following: 1) deciding on responsibility; 2) obtaining support of management; 3) considering security; 4) working with the news media; 5) trusting intuition, and; 6) avoiding paradigms. |
