Summary: | Various problems can occur in contact-bed solids-processing units, such as hoppers and bins containing solids in contact with each other. The problem of fluidization -- loss of solids contact-pressure and the suspension of particles in a fluid -- can result in sudden, unwanted flushing of solid out of the bin. Other problems include solid hangups and excessive compaction, which actually can halt solids flow. Such problems can harm or disrupt the chemical process, but they may be anticipated and avoided in the design stage. Laboratory tests can reveal how the solids will flow at various stages in the process. This requires duplicating the temperature, pressure, solids contact pressure, and chemical reaction that will occur in the unit and measuring the cohesion, friction, compressibility, and permeability properties of the solids at each stage. The key is a understanding of the solids' flow properties and of the conditions that can affect them. |
