Summary: | On Aug 28, 1920, Johnson, the African-American writer, attorney, diplomat, political leader and former secretary of the Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, wrote an article for the US-based newspaper, The Nation, about the American occupation of Haiti which started in 1915 and ended in 1934, ostensibly to quell anarchy and establish democratic rule. But the real story, like the current American intervention in Haiti, has never been that simple, or that noble. Here, he discusses how his Aug 1920 article, headlined "Self-Determining Haiti" was, and still is, a veritable eye-opener. |
