Summary:Our objective was to find out how delinquent males viewed relationships with their favorite celebrities, since the celebrity preferences of such a population had never previously been studied. We administered the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) to 81 juvenile delinquent boys from the province of Tamil Nadu in India who had been or were currently in trouble with the law, and a control group of 38 juveniles who had not been in trouble. The delinquent boys had been sent to Observation Homes or Special Homes by the Government of Tamil Nadu, India. Demographics for both groups were presented. We found that the delinquent juveniles scored significantly lower on the CAS than the non- delinquent juveniles and that age did not correlate significantly with CAS scores for either group. We also found that CAS scores for the non-delinquent sample were much higher than previously recorded scores for samples outside the United States, suggesting that strong admiration for a favorite celebrity is stronger and occurs earlier than previously believed. Reasons for these unexpected findings were discussed.
