Summary:The COVID-19 pandemic presents immense challenges for people with serious mental illness who have high rates of chronic illness and disease. In a system where healthcare service coordination is already lacking, restrictions presented by COVID-19 place consumers at increased risk of worsening mental and physical health. This paper reviews the key components of peer services in promoting positive health outcomes and how they may be adapted to help address COVID-19 experiences. The roles that rehabilitation counselors can take to train and supervise peer support specialists during these unprecedented times are discussed.
