Summary:This article examined the key motivations for Boko Haram (BH) attacks on educational institutions in North East of Nigeria. A total of 24 key informant interview sessions were held with students, educationists, clerics, politicians, civil society organisations, and security personnel. Results showed that the factors that motivate BH attacks on educational institutions in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states include: Western education and the desire to stall access to Western education in the north; the desire to reduce public confidence in government; BH's feelings of envy and anger towards students attending Western education; the need to replenish their membership through the abduction of schoolgirls and the desire to bolster their image via kidnapping of students attending government schools. Therefore, it was recommended that the government at different levels, as well as school authorities and management boards, should prioritise educational institutions as places and environments deserving adequate security/safety measures to ensure effective teaching and learning activities.
