Summary:Baxter Healthcare Corp., a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of health supplies with more than 60,000 employees and $8 billion in annual sales, is shifting its focus from increasing network efficiency to better serving the telecommunications requirements of its business units. Kenneth J. Yorgensen, Baxter's director of telecommunications, says that his firm has been consolidating voice and data in one telecommunications organization since 1985. In addition to being responsible for Baxter's worldwide telecommunications operations, this organization is also responsible for managing Baxter's corporate backbone network. In realigning its focus, Baxter assigns telecommunications personnel to individual business units instead of to projects. The first task of personnel assigned to units is to understand the business needs of those units.
