Summary:Waste Management Inc. is the world's leading environmental services company. According to James C. Murphy, director of computer and telecommunications services, the company views computers and telecommunications as a strategic weapon for providing better customer service, improving business operations, quickly assimilating new subsidiaries, and making possible efficient and cost-effective growth. As the company acquires new subsidiaries, it leverages its vendor relations with major carriers and equipment manufacturers to improve price and performance. It recently installed AT&T SDN and MCI VNET virtual networks to leverage corporate spending. The company is now planning to implement a new strategic network that will link the T1 backbone network with more than 500 Novell token-ring LANs and a number of IBM AS/400 computers that are being installed at the US and Canadian sites. Waste Management has achieved significant savings through videoconferencing by placing PictureTel systems in regional offices to facilitate spontaneous meetings and reduce travel costs.
