Summary:The process with which it mobilises people and support, the questions it raises, the consciousness and perspectives it builds, and the imaginations it evokes are the residues that live long after the visible action subsides. [...]even if a movement fails to achieve what it sets out to achieve, it does not remain devoid of value and meaning. With the declaration of the region as the Nanda Devi National Park and its buffer zone, restrictions were employed on their rights over forests, and consequently, their forest-dependent livelihoods stood curtailed. A private hydropower company, the Rishi Ganga Power Project, was given permission to run at the root of this village, despite it being a buffer zone of a protected area, and close to the Nanda Devi glacier. Reini village approached the High Court of Uttarakhand and the National Green Tribunal in 2019 to seek the stoppage of these destructive practices, but to no avail.2 The villagers also submitted in the court that they gave up their land—a scant and indispensable resource—for project construction in lieu of promised jobs.
