Summary: | The war in Ukraine has a predominantly technical dimension. Both the Russians and Ukrainians employ a huge number of tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery systems in combat operations. However, according to unconfirmed information from various sources, by the beginning of July, both sides had suffered huge losses of combat equipment. Numerous photographs illustrate these losses, but numerical data will not be presented here. History shows that estimates of combat losses are often far from reliable as they are subject to all kinds of distortions caused by the "fog" of war, wishful thinking, outright lies, and other factors. Instead, Cvrk et al analyze the maintenance of combat technical systems in support of ground operations on both sides in the initial period of the war. Tanks, armored vehicles, trucks, and weapon systems, in addition to suffering damage in combat, often fail under conditions of intensive use and increased stress. This equipment cannot be constantly replaced so maintenance and overhaul are very important as elements of the logistics of mechanized operations and should be analyzed. |
