Summary:The research environment is undergoing great change and that change is leading to confusion, uncertainty, and confrontation. An enormous amount of creative energy is being wasted in this environment. To combat this, persons charged with the responsibility of administering and leading research endeavors must become aggressive in their efforts: 1. They must not lose sight of the fact that their research enterprise is built on brains and hard work. 2 They must structure their programs to encourage interdisciplinary research. 3. They must make maximum use of their resources. 4. They must develop very effective accounting systems dealing with their resources. 5. They need to become experts at strategic planning for research.
