Summary: | INTRODUCTION: Prediabetes is a condition in which the blood glucose level is above normal but below the diagnostic threshold for diabetes mellitus. The association between oxidative stress and risk for cardiovascular disease in prediabetes in poorly defined. Hence, the present study intended to explore the risk of cardiovascular disease in prediabetes by assessing the markers of oxidative stress i.e. 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG), malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional case control study, which included 80 cases(prediabetic subjects)and 80 healthy control subjects. In all the cases and controls, oxidative stress markers 8-OHdG, MDA and GSH were estimated. The comparison of parameters between the groups was carried out using student t test. RESULTS: There were significant increase in the levels of 8-OHdG and MDA in prediabetic subjects as compared to control subjects where as the level of reduced glutathione (GSH) was significantly decreased in prediabetes compared to that of controls. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the alterations in the levels of oxidative stress markers in prediabetic subjects indicate their higher risk for the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases in future.
