Summary:A psychoanalytic approach to obesity views the disorder as a manifestation of addiction. Common personality factors and psychodynamics characterize the uncontrollable use of addictive substances, be they drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or food. In the obese patient adaptive needs are distorted; internal urges are formed which are independent of biological needs. Thus, the principles of psychotherapy can be used to help the obese patient overcome addictive behaviors.
