Summary:An outbreak of chicken anemia virus (CAV) infection occurred in 90-day-old growing chickens in August 1992. Affected chickens showed anemia, very low γ-globulin level, multiple petechiae in some muscles and anemic bone marrow. Microscopy revealed lymphocyte depletion in lymphoid tissues and the bone marrow. CAV was isolated from the liver of affected chickens, and no antibodies to several major chicken viruses were detected, suggesting that immunodeficiency predisposed to the present cases.
