Summary:The purpose of this paper is to analyze the cost efficiency of dairy farms in Japan. The overall cost efficiency measure is decomposed of two components: (1) the weak cost efficiency measure; (2) the scale efficiency measure. Linear programming techniques were used in calculating the efficiency measures (cost and scale) for a random sample of dairy farms in Japan in 1989. The study demonstrates that an overall cost inefficiency is not due to the scale inefficiency, but rather to a weak cost inefficiency.
