Summary:Sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (SPW), control and plant leaf phytotoxic effects with plant-derived oils were evaluated on watermelon, Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai var. Lanatus, squash, Curcurbita pepo L., and cucumber, Cucumis sativus L., cultivars. One or two applications of water solutions of 1 to 2% of the oils repelled or killed adults and immature SPW up to 7 days following application. Reduced numbers of immature forms occurred because of the combination of reduced numbers of adults and insecticidal activity of the oils. In most cases minimal or no plant leaf phytotoxicitywas caused by applying 1 or 2% of the oils, but rates of 5% usually caused identifiable plant leaf phytotoxicity.
