Summary:During the winter months, poor vitamin D status among the elderly is common. In this study, a single high dose of oral vitamin D was tested in two homes for the elderly. The two types of vitamin D given were: vitamin D3 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25-OHD3). Four to five month follow ups showed that those subjects who had received the single oral dose of 25-OHD3 returned to their previous low serum levels, while serum vitamin D levels were still high in subjects receiving the oral vitamin D3. The research suggests that vitamin D3 prophylaxis is a safe and effective method of improving vitamin D status in the elderly population.(lsp).
