Summary: | The decision of whether or not to allow a health claim for O3FAs may be based on scientific event for an effect of fish oils either directly on the risk of MIs or CHD death, or indirectly on risk factors associated with CHD. Studies on surrogate markers of CHD risk have been investigated with concentrated fish oils, and usually are controlled by another plant oil, which allows confidence that the active moieties are the O3FAs. The effects of O3FAs on blood lipids have been extensively studied, but this is only one of many mechanisms by which O3FAs might affect CHD risk. Effects on some platelet functions and alternate markers for CHD risk have also been studied. It is important that relationships between surrogate markers and CHD risk be well established and applicable to the general population. Finally, the relative importance of changes in various surrogate markers of CHD risk must be weighed; a health message must truthfully convey a benefit to the general population, and must be safe for all. |
