Summary:An overview provides guidelines and information based on recent research findings for designing food plans which are likely to elicit compliance and obtain good diabetic control in elderly diabetics. Strategies for normalizing blood glucose in Type I and Type II diabetics are presented, as well as actions that can minimize postprandial hyperglycemia. Other information provided includes a summary of US, British, and Canadian dietary recommendations for diabetics and a tabulation of glycemic indices of a variety of foods. The review concludes that a proper food exchange system based on glycemic index may be superior to conventional exchange systems and that no conclusive evidence supports severe carbohydrate restriction (except simple sugars) as a useful, general policy for diabetes management.
