Summary:Elderly people are prone to vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition. This is probably due to a decline of basal metabolic rate and lean body mass as well as reduction in physical activity and total food consumption. The authors studied a group of elderly institutionalized men and women. Their food intake was recorded and certain essential minerals and vitamins found in their blood were measured. The effects of vitamin supplementation on grip strength and immunocompetence were analyzed.
