Summary:The main aim of this study was to test if artificial substrates offer a good method to study the taxonomic structure of assemblages of leeches in the deep, stony litoral of a large lake. Samples collected manually from stone surfaces were compared with those found on artificial structures. Both total densities and taxonomic diversity were strikingly lower among the leeches collected from the artificial structures than at almost all littoral sities
