Summary: | Toxicopathological changes of graded dose levels of ciprofloxacin, a second generation of quinolone chemotherapeutic agent, were determined in broiler chickens. Birds orally administered with therapeutic does (5mg kg(-1) b/wt.) developed mild gastrointestinal signs, anaemia, leucopoenia, hyproglycemia, hypoproteinemia, increased transaminase activity and low degree of toxic hepatitis and nephrosis. Double and triple therapeutic doses produced severe gastrointextinal signs, partial loss of body weight and leg weakness accompanied with significant (P0.01) anaemia, leucopoenia, hypoglycemia, hypoproteinemia and increased transaminase activity. Pathological lesions comprised massive toxic hepatitis, necrotic enteritis and toxic nephrosis and/or nephritis in birds. Triple therapeutic dose also had cytotoxic effect on antibody producing cells of bursa and toxic arthropathy. |
