Summary:The efficacy of a 9-day progestagen treatment was evaluated for the induction of ovulatory oestrus, restoration of ovarian cyclicity, and fertility in 39 postpartum buffalo cows which were anoestrus for 93 to 455 days. Compared to untreate controls, norgestomet treatment proved quite effective in the induction of oestrus (73.3% vs 95.8%; p0.05). The incidence and duration of standing oestrus did not differ between treatment ad control groups but the interval from implant insertion to onset of oestrus differed significantly (41.4ñ1.536 vs 11.9ñ0.09;p0.001). The conception rate at subsequent oestrus were similar. In animals, which did not conceive at induced oestrus, increased oestrous cycle length indicated considerable embryonic mortality. The ovarian cyclicity was restored in 66.7 and 62.5% of control and treated animals respectively. The treatment saved breeding time as 95.8A% animals showed oestrus within 12 days of implant insertion. While in the controls, none displayed oestrus during this time and only 53.3% showed oestrus within 50 days.
