Summary:We studied the water temperature requirements and desiccation and UV tolerance of the thallus of Bangia atropurpurea (Roth) C. Agardh to determine the optimum conditions for its growth in mesocosm tanks. In the laboratory culture, the optimal temperature for initial growth and archeospore formation was 20°C. Thallus length was shorter at 20°C (3 cm) than at other temperatures (e.g., 60 cm at 10°C, 5 cm at 15°C) due to archeospore formation. In mesocosm tanks, the thallus was always covered with diatoms and other algae; thus, the optimal conditions for the growth of the thallus were blocked UV radiation and periodically dry and wet in mesocosm tank. This finding leads to the conclusion that growth for Bangia atropurpurea in outdoor was need to desiccation.
