Summary:Recently, groundfishes in shallow waters off the Okhotsk coast of Hokkaido, and deep sea resources of Japanese waters were surveyed. During these surveys, six rare cottoid fishes representing the first records for Japanese waters were captured: Icelus gilberti, Icelus perminovi, Icelus canaliculatus, Microcottus sellaris, Nautichthys pribilovius and Psychrolutes phrictus. The former two species are the first records since the original descriptions made by Taranetz (1936). This paper describes and illustrates these specimens and provides comparative notes on related forms.
