Summary: | An integrated approach to wilt control has been developed. Before release, varieties are screened by exposure to infected soil and by an infectivity titration method. Cool-season planting, long crop rotations in sugarcane interrows, clean seed and cool storage of seed are all standard practices. Soil amendments and solarisation are being investigated. Diagnostic procedures ranging from selective media to DNA probes are being tried. A major project of international collaboration is seeking to develop clones adapted to lowland conditions and resistant to wilt. |
