Summary:A vigorous approach to cardiac resuscitation has been made possible by the simplicity and effectiveness of external cardiac massage and external defibrillation. A highly trained, immediately available team of anesthesiologists, internists and surgeons rapidly provides: (1) an open airway, (2) maintenance of cardiac output by external cardiac massage, (3) use of appropriate drugs for arrhythmias and hypotension and (4) external defibrillation by countershock and external pacemaker stimulation. This emergency team has attempted resuscitation in 29 patients with acute myocardial infarction. Eight were successfully resuscitated and 3 recovered completely.
