Summary:Factors causing the partial loss of a lower limb may simultaneously produce extensive injury to the remaining portions of the same limb as well as to the opposite limb. The restoration of these parts assumes special importance by virtue of the added functional burden placed upon them. At the same time, the nature of the demands for minimal scarring of the amputated limb imposes restrictions which complicate the selection of effective plastic reconstructive procedures. Several methods of circumventing these obstacles are offered.
