Structure and transition of eutectic (Mg,Al) 2Ca Laves phase in a die-cast Mg–Al–Ca base alloy

The crystal structure of a eutectic (Mg,Al) 2Ca Laves phase in as-cast AXJ530 (Mg–5Al–3Ca–0.15Sr) was identified as C36 by electron diffraction analysis. The C36 phase transformed to C15(Al 2Ca) during annealing at 573 K. The orientation relationship for the C15 and C36 phases is reported.
