Summary: | A reply to Janice Beyer's Taming and Promoting Charisma to Change Organizations is presented. Beyer presents a new paradigm of charismatic and transformational leadership as a downgrading of the concept of charisma. Some of what she says is valid, but much requires qualification. To understand Beyer's critique, one must accept as unchangeable doctrine handed down from Max Weber, the five components of charisma as enunciated by Trice and Beyer (1988). Beyer's problem is trying to put her arms around a vast field of work. |
