Summary:Fresh leaves of Calotropis procera fed to five sheep produced signs of toxicity and death of 4 of them between 33 and 83 days. Loss of appetite, diarrhoea, dyspnoea, alopecia and a steady deterioration of condition were the main clinical signs. The lesions consisted of hepatocellular necrosis and portal fibrosis, catarrhal enteritis, splenic haemosiderosis, pulmonary congestion and oedema, haemorrhage in the heart and degeneration and/or necrosis of the cells of the renal convoluted tubules. These changes were accompanied by an increase in the concentration of ammonia, sodium, potassium and creatinine and a decrease in the concentration of total proteins and calcium in the serum. Haematological changes indicated the development of a normocytic normochromic anacmia.
