Summary:The Princeton Ocean Model (POM) is adopted to simulate the circulation and seasonal variation of average salinity in the northern South China Sea (SCS), and the influence of the Kuroshio Current and river diluted water on the distribution of salinity is also discussed. According to the simulation results, the salinity field changed significantly with seasons in general. The invasion of the Kuroshio is strongest in winter and is weakest in summer. The low salinity area in the vicinity of the Pearl River estuary is mainly affected by river runoff, and usually gets maximum impact in summer. In summary, the monthly variation of salinity has a strong correlation of the Kuroshio and the river diluted water. And these phenomena are consistent with actual measurements
